Lymphatic drainage
Lymphatic drainage encourages the movement of lymph and excess fluid towards areas where lymphatic flow is intact. The manual technique uses gentle, rhythmic movements of the skin, while mechanical drainage uses pneumatic cuffs that apply alternating pressure to encourage fluid movement out of the arms or legs.
The aim is to reduce swelling and heaviness associated with fluid retention. For lymphoedema, drainage forms part of a wider plan that may include compression, movement and skin care, with the method chosen according to the cause of swelling and the condition of the area being treated.
